Equine Health / Illness Overview
Along with any discussion of equine illness, owners must have a clear understanding of what it takes to maintain your horse’s health. There is a cycle of equine care when properly maintained promotes healthy and happy horses. Part of the care cycle is routine (daily) inspection of your horse. The following is a partial list of equine illnesses and when available observable symptoms. Diagnosing horse ailments requires a vet. (Click here for a list of Florida veterinarians)

Infectious Diseases: Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens (bacteria, fungi, Viruses, protozoa and parasites). Many of the most serious diseases can be prevented by vaccines.
Here is a partial of the more serious equine diseases:

  2. Equine Encephalomyelitis
  3. Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) (Also known as Swamp Fever)
  4. Equine Influenza
  5. Equine Protozoal Myeloncephalitis (EPM)
  6. Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA)
  7. Leptospirosis
  8. Lyme Disease
  9. Piroplasmosis
  10. Pneumonia
  11. Potomac Horse Fever (PHF)
  12. Rabies
  13. Rhinopneumonitis
  14. Samonellosis
  15. Tetanus (Lockjaw)
  16. Vesicular Stomatitis (VS)
